'Umbrella agreement’ reached on data protection

After four years of negotiations AmCham EU welcomes the signing, by EU and US officials, of an ‘umbrella agreement’ on data protection. The agreement will cover personal data that is transferred between US and EU law enforcement agencies and is seen as an important step towards strengthening the fundamental right to privacy in Europe and rebuilding trust in EU-US data flows, according to Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová.

A delegation of AmCham EU members travelled to Washington, DC last week for the annual Doorknock, meeting with the US administration, agencies and Congress on cross-sectoral issues such as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and wider transatlantic economic relations including energy, agriculture, trade and financial services. The Doorknock coincided with the Transatlantic Week in Washington, organised by the Transatlantic Policy Network (TPN).

AmCham EU presents at TTIP stakeholder event round 10

Andreas Galanakis, AmCham EU Policy Director, spoke on regulatory cooperation at the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership stakeholder event. Andreas stated that AmCham EU believes TTIP is a great opportunity to create a framework for transatlantic cooperation that could reduce or eliminate unnecessary regulatory divergences. Doing so will also facilitate business for those already engaged in the transatlantic economy, but also broaden the opportunities of smaller businesses which do not currently trade across the Atlantic.

July plenary focuses on climate change and COP21

AmCham EU hosted its July plenary meeting on Tuesday 14 July. The topic was climate change and the upcoming COP21 negotiations in Paris at the end of the year. Keynote speakers were John Sammis, Deputy Chief of Mission, US Mission to the EU, and Artur Runge-Metzger, Director of International & Climate Strategy, Directorate-General for Climate Action, European Commission.

Letter to Commissioner Malmström and Ambassador Froman ahead of the 10th round of TTIP negotiations

Ahead of the 10th negotiating round for a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement between the EU and the United States, the European Business Alliance for TTIP – a coalition of key industry associations in the EU that supports the conclusion of a comprehensive, ambitious TTIP agreement – today sent a letter to EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström and US Trade Representative Michael Froman urging negotiators to upscale the political momentum of the talks. 

European Parliament backs TTIP

The European Parliament has given its strong backing to the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement between the EU and the United States, voting with a large majority on July 9, 2015 to adopt its recommendations to the European Commission on TTIP.

AmCham EU, TABC and ERT have joined forces to create a TTIP twitter campaign to support the conclusion of the trade negotiations. The handle of the account is @Alliance4TTIP. The aim of the campaign is to be open-source and user friendly, so anyone (especially in the Member States) can use the materials we will provide (tweets, Q&As, infographics, etc.). The effort so far has the support of the following associations: AmCham EU; TABC; ERT; BusinessEurope; ESF; EuroChambres and Cefic. We will be tweeting to show our support for the conclusion of TTIP, using the hashtag #Yes2TTIP. Thanks in advance for following our account and don’t hesitate to spread our tweets! #Yes2TTIP.

On Tuesday 7 July, AmCham EU organised a workshop with officials from the Commission and the Member States on the impact of the Dodd-Frank Act. The panel featured representatives from the US government and experts from European and American corporations across various sectors of the economy. The panellists shared their views and experience in complying with the Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Act in order to feed into the current EU debate on conflict minerals.

June plenary on medical devices takes place

The June plenary took place on Tuesday 16 June. The focus for the plenary was on Medical Devices with Tomasz Husak, Head of Cabinet to Elzbieta Bienkowska, Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, European Commission, and Carsten Bermig, Member of Bienkowska's Cabinet, as keynote speakers. Mr Husak delivered an address on 'the new regulatory framework for medical devices: combining patients' safety and innovation'.

TTIP Task Force delegation visit to Strasbourg

A delegation from the TTIP Task Force travelled to Strasbourg this week to meet with MEPs ahead of the, since postponed, vote on the INTA report. 

The Task Force were joined by the Transatlantic Business Council (TABC), the European Services Forum (ESF) and BusinessEurope.
