On Thursday, 6 May 2021, as part of the Atlantic Council’s EU-US Future Forum, Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU took to the stage to discuss the state of transatlantic trade ties in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. She was joined for a panel discussion by Former Acting US Representative to the EU, Ronald Gidwitz, alongside Rupert Schlegelmiilch, Director of the Americas, Agriculture, and Food Safety, Directorate-General for Trade, European Commission. The discussion was moderated by Katerina Sokou, Washington DC Correspondent, Kathimerini/SKAI TV.

With yesterday’s proposal for a regulation on foreign subsidies, the European Commission seeks to address foreign subsidies which risk distorting the EU internal market and undermine a level playing field. The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU) supports the Commission’s efforts to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of the Single Market and find the appropriate balance between fair competition and open trade when addressing non-EU subsidies.

Today, the European Commission released its highly-anticipated Communication on Better Regulation. It marks a positive step forward for high-quality and transparent decision making in the EU building on earlier commitments to develop a strong Better Regulation approach ‘at the heart’ of policymaking. Through the inclusion of a wide range of stakeholders and the adoption of a science-based approach, rules and standards can encourage innovation and the emergence of new goods and services. However, unnecessary administrative burden and regulation also affect growth and can make it more difficult for companies to expand.

EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement: European Parliament vote brings further certainty

The European Parliament formally gave consent to the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, which sets out the terms of the future relationship between the EU and the UK. This deal is a strong building block towards an ambitious partnership across the Channel. While the agreement conditionally came into force on 31 December 2020, the vote brings further certainty for companies operating across the Channel as the temporary implementation period was scheduled to end later this week.

Last week was a big week for global climate ambition, with President Biden convening 40 world leaders for a virtual Climate Summit on the occasion of Earth Day. To mark the occasion, a number of countries followed the US’ lead in making tangible commitments to reduce emissions. This followed news that, earlier in the week, EU lawmakers had reached an agreement on the ‘European Climate Law’ after 14 hours of ‘trilogue’ negotiations between the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the EU.

The European Commission announced today a comprehensive proposal for regulating artificial intelligence (AI) across the European Union. AmCham EU supports the European Commission’s objectives to enable uptake of trusted AI applications and ensuring a harmonised EU approach. AmCham EU welcomes the important risk-based approach to regulating AI, and our member companies will now take time to thoroughly assess the proposal. On Thursday, 15 April, AmCham EU hosted a workshop on Environmental due diligence with experts from the OECD Centre for Responsible Business Conduct in Paris. Stephanie Venuti, Environmental lead, illustrated the OECD’s work around environmental due diligence and the different resources companies can draw upon to improve their due diligence. Barbara Bijelic, Legal Expert, placed the OECD guidelines into a broader regulatory context at EU and global level. The presentations were followed by a discussion with AmCham EU member companies.
