On Friday 22 October, in anticipation of the forthcoming COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow, AmCham EU hosted a webinar bringing together business representatives to exchange views and deep dive into what role business can play in its success. An esteemed panel comprising of Susan Danger (AmCham EU), Frank Heemskerk (European Round Table for Industry), Norine Kennedy (United States Council for International Business), and Gary Litman (US Chamber of Commerce) provided much food for thought in a discussion that was deftly moderated by Leah Charpentier (First Solar).

On Thursday, 21 October, AmCham EU hosted a roundtable meeting with Ambassador Katherine Tai, United States Trade Representative. Representatives of BusinessEurope also joined the conversation. The roundtable featured a discussion on the Trade and Technology Council (TTC), how the transatlantic partnership can further the global sustainability agenda and the overall EU-US relationship in the context of the global multilateral trading system. Ahead of the first ministerial meeting of the TTC, AmCham EU released a set of dedicated papers detailing its recommendations for EU-US cooperation across a range of areas.

G20: international tax deal shows multilateralism works

On Wednesday, 13 October, G20 Finance Ministers endorsed the political agreement reached last week by 136 countries to reform the international corporate tax framework. The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU) generally supports the OECD Inclusive Framework deal, but urges further detailed work in order to ensure that the agreement succeeds in stabilising the international tax system and addressing challenges arising from the digitalisation of the global economy.

Investing in soil health systems is how agriculture can help enhance farmer livelihoods while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving biodiversity, improving water quality and increasing drought resilience. In Europe, Cargill is working with Soil Capital on a project to help farmers in Belgium and France adopt regenerative agriculture practices like cover crops and reduced tillage through the use of a carbon farm management system, which helps farmers identify the best management practices to maximise the profitability of their land while minimising their greenhouse gas emissions.

Towards carbon-free farming with bio-methane

New Holland Agriculture, part of the CNH Industrial group, has pioneered sustainable, innovative solutions through its Clean Energy Leader strategy. One strand of its research activity has focused on using bio-methane generated from agricultural waste to power farming equipment, with the aim of achieving carbon-free agricultural operations. This led to the development of New Holland’s methane-powered tractor, an all-purpose machine that can be used for a wide range of tasks – field work, jobs around the farm yard and pulling trailers.

Sustainable refrigerants such as Chemours’ Opteon™ XL and Opteon™ and Opteon™ XP can bring significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions as well as complying with the EU’s ever-more stringent environmental regulations in a wide variety of sectors covered by the EU’s Green Deal. That is because refrigerants based on HFO (Hydrofluoroolefins) have zero Ozone Depletion (ODP) potential and lower Global Warming Potential (GWP), placing them among the most environmentally sustainable refrigerants on the market.
