AmCham EU stands in solidarity with the European Commission’s Beating Cancer Plan

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. In Europe, 2.6 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year, with nearly half of that number succumbing to the disease. If decisive action is not taken, then by 2035, approximately 40% of Europeans can expect to face cancer in their lifetime.

On this year’s World Cancer Day, AmCham EU stands in solidarity with the European Commission’s Beating Cancer Plan. Several of our member companies directly contribute to the fight against cancer providing innovative solutions in the form of cancer treatments or developing the medical devices used in cancer diagnosis.

AmCham EU shares recommendations to the Portuguese Presidency

AmCham EU welcomes the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Portugal’s Presidency comes at a critical juncture for the EU. In light of the two-pronged health and economic crisis that the global pandemic has provoked, the Presidency will play an instrumental role in charting Europe’s recovery. Our recommendations to the Portuguese Presidency aim to ensure we reach our common objectives of a stronger and more prosperous EU. The document highlights the priorities and recommendations that we believe will make Europe more competitive and an attractive place for investment. AmCham EU looks forward to working closely with Portugal during its Presidency to ensure we reach our common objectives of strong, green and digital economic recovery.

Envisioning the economic future of the transatlantic trade relationship

Which key themes will define the transatlantic trade relationship in 2021? That was the question at the Fiscal Note Executive Institute’s roundtable discussion on Thursday, 28 January – where AmCham EU was represented among an esteemed panel by CEO Susan Danger.

The discussion, ably moderated by Kate Smyth Haskins, Vice President for External Affairs, German Marshall Fund to the US (GMF), kicked off with each of the panellists offering their perspectives on how the transatlantic relationship might evolve under the new US administration.

Open strategic autonomy: what’s in a name?

The panel discussion, moderated by Stéphanie Brochard, Senior Account Manager, FleishmanHillard and featuring Filip-Alexandru Negreanu-Arboreanu, Deputy Head of Cabinet for Commissioner Vălean, European Commission; Jan-Christoph Oetjen, Member of European Parliament (RE, DE), Vice-Chair TRAN; Valentina Vecchio, EU Governmental Affairs Sustainability Lead, The Boeing Company; and Christelle Verstraeten, Senior Director EU Policy, ChargePoint, focused on the key components of the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, highlighting the importance of the sector for Europe’s economic recovery and for keeping Europe on the move in a sustainable way.

Brussels, 21 January 2021 – On his first day in office, President Biden announced that the United States is re-joining the Paris Agreement. The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU) applauds this decision which signals his Administration’s intent to tackle climate change through a global framework that engages all players. 

Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU, said: ‘We represent companies that are already researching, developing and investing in low-carbon solutions and technologies. We have always advocated for a stable and predictable framework for investments to encourage and sustain these efforts. The Paris Agreement provides clear goals as well as a balanced and cost-efficient approach to reducing emissions.’

As from 20 January 2021, President Joe Biden has taken office as the 46th President of the United States. The election itself saw the greatest voter turnout in the history of the US. This was an important reaffirmation of democracy. In the aftermath of this most fiercely contested election, the shocking and disturbing scenes from the Capitol Building on the day of the certification of the election results will serve as a reminder to President Biden that his principal task must now be to unify the country, alongside mapping the path to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
