Towards the right direction: the General Approach to the European Chips Act

On Thursday, 1 December, the Competitiveness Council agreed on the General Approach to the European Chips Act, which will  ensure the availability of semiconductors across sectors and for all types and generations of chips. AmCham EU strongly supports the swift progress made on semiconductors regulation, as part of the EU’s ambition to develop a more geographically diversified, sustainable and resilient semiconductor supply chain. The speed at which the Presidency of the Council to the European Union and Member States reached a common position reflects the urgent need to make Europe’s semiconductor supply chain more resilient and to mobilise larger investments into innovative technology.

The EU and the US must take advantage of the upcoming Trade and Technology Council (TTC) ministerial to enhance collaboration and strengthen the transatlantic relationship, according to Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President, A Europe Fit for the Digital Age, European Commission, who gave the keynote address at the 10th Annual Transatlantic Digital Economy Conference on Tuesday, 29 November. In an age of geopolitical instability, fora like the TTC are a powerful tool for delivering resilience to an increasingly digitalised society. On Tuesday, 15 November, AmCham EU hosted a panel discussion on the Future of Public Affairs in a Changing Environment featuring Doru Peter Frantescu, CEO and Founder, EU Matrix and Jessica O'Flynn, Director for Government Affairs, SC Johnson. The panel looked at how the profession changed after the COVID-19 pandemic and what trends industry leaders can expect for 2023. The panel also examined early dynamics in European political parties ahead of the 2024 elections.

Discussing healthcare and resilience in Prague

A delegation of AmCham EU members was in Prague last week to discuss European health policy with key stakeholders in the Czech Republic. Over Tuesday, 8 November and Wednesday, 9 November, and in collaboration with AmCham Czech Republic, members brought their perspectives on issues including healthcare infrastructure, public investment, the recovery and resilience facility and the European Health Data Space. The delegation met with a range of stakeholders, including Jakub Dvořáček, MHA, LLM, Deputy Health Minister for EU Affairs, Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic. We are grateful to AmCham Czech Republic for the cooperation and partnership.

Focusing on progress at the TTC

‘The geopolitical case and the economic case for the transatlantic relationship has probably never been stronger,’ emphasised Thibaut L’Ortye, Director of Public Affairs, AmCham EU in a recent interview with Euractiv. Approaching the third meeting of the EU-US Trade and Technology Council (TTC) on 5 December, there’s optimism that the TTC can continue to be the primary forum for deepening the transatlantic relationship in a challenging geopolitical environment. Producing tangible deliverables and setting clear roadmaps for further progress need to remain the priority for negotiators at the TTC, and industry groups, like AmCham EU, are ready to engage and play their part.

On Thursday, 10 November, AmCham EU held a special town hall on the role of financial services in Europe's economic future featuring a keynote by Mairead McGuiness, Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Unions, European Commission. The discussions touched on financial services innovations, the Capital Markets Union and financial resilience in the face of Europe's concurrent crises. McGuiness discussed some of the priorities for the rest of the Commission's mandate, and emphasised the importance of transatlantic cooperation in the months and years ahead.  

EU-US Data Privacy Framework: support from transatlantic organisations

Cross-border data flows are the foundation of global trade and innovation in an increasingly digitised world. Following a recent US executive order approving the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, AmCham EU has joined together with the Information Technology Council (ITI) and other key industry associations to urge policymakers to adopt the framework's adequacy decision.
