On Tuesday, 17 May, AmCham EU hosted an event exploring the outcomes of the Trade and Technology Council’s Paris Summit. The panellists sought to analyse the outcomes of the Summit in the context of transatlantic cooperation in the digital sphere and of the current European digital legislative priorities. Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU moderated the panel, which featured Eva Maydell, MEP (EPP, BG); Thibaut Kleiner, Director, Policy Strategy and Outreach, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, European Commission; and Jean-Marc Leclerc, Director, EU Affairs, IBM and Co-director, IBM Policy Lab.

On Tuesday, 17 May AmCham EU hosted an event to discuss the future of EU trade policy and how to bridge the gap between European and local levels. Despite the size, importance and strength of trade, the benefits of globalisation are often questioned. Exports - supported by trade relationships like the $1.1 trillion transatlantic partnership - support one in seven jobs in the EU. Yet, trade disputes and rising protectionism continue to pose real threats to the support of international trade in Europe. In order to provide prosperity to citizens in a changing economy while contributing to the green transition, panelists highlighted the importance of cooperation between policymakers, business and other stakeholders.

CBAM and trade competitiveness: can they coexist?

The European Commission has proposed implementing a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to combat carbon leakage and phase out the EU Emissions Trading System’s free allowance. In its current form, the CBAM challenges not only European export competitiveness in markets that have lower or no carbon prices but also the EU’s ability to stem carbon leakage. However, with an adjustment for exports, the EU can not only keep the playing field even for businesses but also protect our planet. AmCham EU goes across the pond

Last week AmCham EU sent a delegation to Washington, DC for a series of meetings with US-based stakeholders including the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, Capitol Hill and business groups such as the US Chamber of Commerce. Discussions covered a number of topics including the Trade and Technology Council and the multilateral trading system and served to highlight the importance of a strong EU-US relationship. In today's global context, it is more important than ever that the two partners work together to tackle common challenges.

Rethinking global trade

The Federation of German Industries (BDI) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung organised jointly an online discussion titled ‘Rethinking Global Trade – Where is it Heading?’. Thibaut L’Ortye, Director of Public Affairs, AmCham EU joined the panellists to discuss the state of international trade and the role of the EU as a global leader. He highlighted the importance of establishing an ambitious and open EU trade strategy, strengthening transatlantic leadership in the run up to the Trade and Transatlantic Council ministerial and rebuilding people’s trust in the benefits of a multilateral trading system.

As both sides gear up for the second ministerial meeting of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) in Paris on 15-16 May, we have outlined three principles that should continue to guide the activities across all working groups: foster transparency and stakeholder engagement; outline roadmaps and clear deliverables; and prioritise outcomes with concrete impact. Throughout the discussions, transatlantic policymakers should focus on specific areas where the EU and the US can achieve tangible progress: emerging technology standards, 5G, cybersecurity, climate and clean technology, export controls, rules-based trading system and semiconductors. EMPOWER HER: advancing female empowerment across the Atlantic

On Monday, 9 May, Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU signed the EMPOWER HER declaration on behalf of AmCham EU and the network of AmChams in Europe during a meeting with Diane Farrell, Deputy Under Secretary for International Trade in Washington, DC. The EMPOWER HER initiative, announced by Gina M. Raimondo, US Secretary of Commerce at AmCham EU’s Transatlantic Conference in March, aims to promote the role of women in international business and trade. It will explore ways to encourage US and European companies to support women owned and operated exporters and business interests abroad.

European Health Data Space: an important tool to bridge the digital gap

The European Commission published today its proposal to create a European health data space (EHDS). The American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union (AmCham EU) supports this initiative that seeks to further bridge the digital gap in the life science and healthcare sectors. A common European approach for the use and re-use of health data has the potential to make the development of innovative health technologies at the scale of the EU easier and boost the creation of new treatments, therapies and medical devices.

Exploring the implications of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive

On Thursday, 28 April, AmCham EU hosted a plenary meeting on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and its international implications. The keynote speaker, Saskia Slomp, CEO, European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), presented EFRAG’s approach to the architecture of reporting standards and addressed questions on alignment with international standards in the Q&A session moderated by David Henry Doyle, Head of Government Affairs, S&P Global.

Leveraging digital in public and corporate affairs

On Friday, 29 April, AmCham EU kicked off its new Comms talks series celebrating all of those communicators out there. The first meeting of the series featured a discussion on how to leverage digital in public and corporate affairs with Jean-Vianney Philippe, Head of Digital Marketing, Weber Shandwick. The interactive session touched on it all: from dissecting the differences between audience segmentation and targeting in traditional media versus online demographics, to exploring the impacts of new platforms and tools, such as the metaverse, and the role they can play in the world of public affairs.

The future of healthcare with AmCham Croatia

On Tuesday, 26 April, AmCham Croatia organised a conference titled ‘The Future of Healthcare’ where Jelka Drašković, Director, Key Markets Europe and Canada, MSD, presented some preliminary findings for Croatia from AmCham EU’s upcoming ‘Economist report on Health System Dynamics in CEE’, which will be released soon. As issue lead of the report, Jelka represented AmCham EU in Zagreb and spoke about healthcare financing and resources of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the provision of care and an assessment of the health systems in the region.

On Friday, 8 April AmCham EU hosted the event ‘European Parliament midterm: what to expect in the next two and a half years of the EU legislative term?’. After a presentation on the main midterm changes in the European Parliament by Doru Peter Frantescu, CEO and Co-founder, VoteWatch Europe, we welcomed László Andor, Secretary-General, Foundation for European Progressive Studies, Tomi Huhtanen, Executive Director, Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, and Daniel Kaddik, Executive Director, European Liberal Forum for a panel discussion. During the session, we assess the first half of the EU legislative term and discuss what to expect in the last two EU legislative years before the next EU elections in 2024.

World IP day - IP and youth: Innovating for a better future

Transatlantic Conference 2022

This year’s Transatlantic Conference, themed ‘Shared values, shared impact: the power of the transatlantic relationship’ served to spark dialogues on the importance of a strong and united transatlantic relationship, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine. The conference took place on Thursday, 24 March 2021 and featured speakers from both sides of the Atlantic. As an opening speech, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo reiterated the importance of a shared response against Russia’s aggression, but noted that the spark of a revitalised transatlantic cooperation had been lit months back.
