AmCham EU commends the US Congress for passing the Judicial Redress Act (JRA), which enables European citizens to challenge the misuse of data shared between law enforcement authorities on either side of the Atlantic in US Courts. The passing of the JRA is a key step in rebuilding trust in transatlantic relations.

The adoption of the Act will put the last piece in place of the EU-US Umbrella Agreement, which covers data protection in transatlantic law enforcement cooperation. It also provides an important political sign in relation to the EU-US Privacy Shield (successor to Safe Harbour), demonstrating the ability of the two administrations to reform towards a shared end goal respecting the rights of their citizens.

Speaking on the passing of the JRA, Susan Danger, Managing Director of AmCham EU said, ‘This is a welcome step in rebuilding trust by giving EU citizens the right to judicial redress in the United States on data privacy issues’.

Having already passed the Senate and the Congress, the JRA now only requires President Obama’s signature.
