Discussing chemicals legislation in Helsinki and Warsaw

From Monday, 6 March to Tuesday, 7 March, an AmCham EU delegation met with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki, Finland. The delegates spoke with Dr Sharon McGuinness, Executive Director, ECHA and Frank Buchler, Head of Unit, ECHA, to discuss the EU Green Deal and the EU's chemicals strategy. The delegation then traveled to Warsaw, Poland on Wednesday, 8 March, to meet with the Ministry of Development and Technology and the Ministry of Health. The trips led to a fruitful exchange on the challenges faced by both industry and the Member States around the EU's chemicals legislation.

Speaking on the Cyber Resilience Act at the European Parliament

On Wednesday, 8 March, AmCham EU participated in a hearing session on the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) at the European Parliament. The session, organised by Beatrice Covassi, MEP (S&D, IT), was opened by Lorena Boix Alonso, Director, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, European Commission. Lucia López Carasa, Policy Adviser, AmCham EU highlighted the need for industry input in clarifying the scope and reporting obligations of the CRA. AmCham EU Board hosts Polish Ambassador

On Friday, 10 March, AmCham EU’s Board of Directors welcomed Ambassador Andrzej Sadoś, Permanent Representative of Poland to the European Union for a seated lunch. The discussions covered a range of issues that will be central to the upcoming Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2025 and the need to continue to strengthen the transatlantic relationship.

From Tuesday, 28 February to Thursday, 2 March an AmCham EU delegation was in Northern Ireland as part of a customs study group tour. The trip centred around a visit to the Parliament Buildings at Stormont and a tour of Warrenpoint Port. Delegates met with the Executive Office, the Northern Irish Chamber of Commerce and the Department for the Economy. The trip allowed for an inside look into Northern Irish customs procedures and history during a pivotal time as talks on the Northern Ireland Protocol and Windsor Framework between London and Brussels continue.

State aid and the future

The discussion, hosted by the Centre for European Reform and Clifford Chance, focused on how to organise the EU’s industrial policy to keep Member States competitive. They examined the importance of industry input in policy and how US companies can aid in Europe's competitiveness goals. 

Critical Raw Materials Act: securing supply chains

Today, critical raw materials (CRMs) are essential components of the transportation, energy and digital economy sectors, among many others. However, their availability for industry in Europe is threatened by natural domestic scarcity and rising global demand. On 14 March 2023, the European Commission will propose the CRM Act, designed to increase and diversify the supply of CRMs in the EU. For the proposal to match the ambitions of the EU’s green and digital transitions and successfully complement the EU’s Green Deal Industrial Plan, policymakers should consider industry’s recommendations to bolster domestic CRM production, pursue partnerships abroad, foster sustainable practices and look to the future. Keeping Europe green

On Tuesday, 28 February AmCham EU hosted a discussion on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the need for a committed US industry in Europe to help keep both sides of the Atlantic clean for future generations. Among the speakers was Gerassimos Thomas, Director-General, Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union (TAXUD), European Commission who spoke over a seated luncheon. One year on: AmChams in Europe steadfast in support for the people of Ukraine

One year ago, Russia invaded Ukraine, violating international law, endangering peace and security across the region and causing unspeakable suffering. As the war rages on, AmChams in Europe – the umbrella organisation for 46 AmChams in 44 countries across Europe and Eurasia – continues to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, as we have since 24 February 2022. Our thoughts remain with all those impacted, including our fellow AmCham colleagues, their members, partners and families.
