How can women entrepreneurs make their mark and gain a foothold in the US? This is the question AmCham Ukraine looked to answer during their EMPOWER HER webinar on Wednesday, April 5. Equipping women entrepreneurs with the tools they need to tap into the vast US market is just one example of the many topics covered by EMPOWER HER. From the opening remarks to the conclusion, attendees were informed of how to secure funding for their budding enterprises and what they can do to expand into the American market.

In a meeting with AmCham EU, Juhan Lepassaar, Executive Director, European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) dove deep into the EU-US Cyber Dialogue on Friday, 31 March. Together with his colleague Eric Vetillard, Lead Certification Expert, ENISA, the two covered the need for building cyber resilience in the context of the war in Ukraine and for the EU and the US to exchange best practices to protect critical infrastructure. Speaking on behalf of American industry in the EU, Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU, took part in a EU-US business roundtable covering clean energy on Monday, 3 April. Susan brought attention to the challenges facing US companies in Europe and the importance of regulatory simplicity, easier access to state funding and technology neutrality in the clean energy sector. In the runup to the EU-US Energy Council on Tuesday, 4 April, policymakers from both sides of the Atlantic made it clear that transatlantic cooperation is the basis to achieving the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

Making the Foreign Subsidies Regulation work

AmCham EU, together with 12 organisations representing a broad array of industries from Europe and its leading trading partners, supports the objectives of the EU’s Regulation on foreign subsidies distorting the internal market. The Regulation entered into force on 12 January 2023 and will start applying from 12 July 2023. Despite positive recent steps from the Commission to clarify the obligations imposed by the Regulation, the draft Implementing Regulation that is currently under discussion would still create a disproportionate burden for EU and non-EU businesses with a global presence. On Friday, 31 March, AmCham EU met with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Agency (NIST) to discuss work on digital identity. The meeting focused on the work being done on electronic ID cards and an overview on the EU-US Trade and Technology Council. They also discussed and gave updates on Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, Internet of Things Cybersecurity guidance and the Privacy Framework. The session then concluded after a Q&A and industry suggestion session with AmCham EU members.

From Wednesday, 29 March to Thursday, 30 March, AmCham EU visited Madrid, Spain for a series of meetings ahead of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU. The trip began with an event focused on women’s empowerment where the speakers, including Susan Danger, CEO, AmCham EU, highlighted the awareness raised by EMPOWER HER and the work ahead in achieving economic parity for women. A networking session with Julissa Reynoso Pantaleon, US Ambassador to Spain followed. The visit concluded by meeting with Álvaro Rodríguez Ruíz, Deputy Director-General for Commercial Policy of the European Union, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism to discuss the upcoming presidency and the importance of transatlantic trade.

The Brussels Briefing is an approach to inform colleagues about the latest developments in EU policy, to exchange advocacy best practices and to network. This year's programme began with advocacy workshops focusing on digital and healthcare issues. The day also saw sessions on transatlantic cooperation, EMPOWER HER, the attractiveness of Europe and an inside look at the stories driving the agenda in Brussels.

Maximum harmonisation across Member States will protect the integrity of the Single Market and ease burdens on businesses operating across the EU. This year’s Transatlantic Conference, ‘Thriving together: uniting in the face of global challenges’ put industry and institutions in the same room to discuss the importance of a strong and united transatlantic relationship, especially on the green and digital transitions. The conference took place on Wednesday, 22 March 2023 and featured speakers from both sides of the Atlantic. As an opening video, Gina Raimondo, US Secretary of Commerce, underlined the importance of keeping the transatlantic dialogue open through forums like the Trade and Technology Council. Michael Miebach, CEO, Mastercard, then expanded on why the focus should be on innovation, sustainability and inclusion to keep the EU and US competitive.  

Launch of The Transatlantic Economy 2023

The Transatlantic Economy 2023 presents the most up-to-date facts and figures about the economic relationship between Europe and the United States. The research was conducted independently by Daniel Hamilton and Joseph Quinlan at the Foreign Policy Institute, School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University and the Transatlantic Leadership Network. This edition features new insights into the impact of the war in Ukraine, international sanctions on Russia, transatlantic energy transformations, the reconfiguration of global supply chains with ‘derisking’ strategies, relations with China as well as the green and digital transitions. It also includes individual profiles for 30+ European countries, with Ukraine surveyed for the first time, and all 50 US states. This year marks the 20th edition of The Transatlantic Economy, the annual survey of transatlantic jobs, trade and investment.

Discussing the EU's digital economy in Strasbourg

From Monday, 13 March to Wednesday, 15 March, an AmCham EU delegation visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. The trip centered around meetings with a total of 14 MEPs representing the five main political groups. The delegates voiced their concerns on the AI Act and Data Act, and offered solutions based on industry input. Making sure definitions are clear and avoiding legal fragmentation are the way forward for both acts.  

Diving deep on finance in Frankfurt and Strasbourg

On Monday, 13 March an AmCham EU delegation travelled to Frankfurt, Germany to meet with the European Central Bank, European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority and International Sustainability Standards Board. On Tuesday, 14 March the delegation then travelled to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France to meet with 11 MEPs. The delegation focused on the Capital Markets Union package, Banking package, Instant Payments and the implementation of Digital Operational Resilience Act. The proper implementation of these acts is crucial for securing a level-playing field and avoiding legal fragmentation in financial services.
