Relay for Life 2024

For 24 hours over Saturday, 1 and Sunday, 2 June, the AmCham EU staff, members, alumni and their families campaigned and raised funds for the fight against cancer at the annual Relay for Life at the Stade du Pachy in Waterloo, Belgium. Cancer touches all of our lives in one way or another, and staying on the track for a whole day represents a small tribute to the perseverance of cancer patients and their loved ones. AmCham EU was able to raise our goal of €10,000 with special thanks to Amazon, DuPont, FTI Consulting and TE Connectivity, among many others.

On Tuesday, 28 May, we looked at how the EU can solidify itself as a leader in the fight against climate change. We also dove into how climate policies will impact the competitiveness of the EU while reaching its Green Deal goals. Our panelist explained why finding the right balance between environmental ambition and economic prosperity is crucial for a successful transition. The discussions highlighted the need for innovation and investment in green technologies to ensure the EU remains a global leader.  

Revolutionising water management with technology

In Larissa, Greece, Cisco has partnered with the local municipal water supply and sewage utility, DEYAL, and technology company IoTECH to pilot smart water meters. Digitising the collection of water meter readings has the potential to save time for DEYAL staff and improve water management. Calls for clearer VAT guidance for charitable donations

Businesses across Europe make a difference every time they donate goods instead of destroying them. Yet paying VAT on donated goods is still required in Member States, despite an exemption existing in the VAT Directive. Together with Accountancy Europe, CFE Tax Advisers Europe, and Ecommerce Europe, we are calling on the European Commission to support the proliferation of VAT relief on charitable donations through guidance and/or dedicated campaigns. Conserving drinking water in France through sustainable water management

In parts of France, episodes of frequent drought have become a recurring issue in recent years. By partnering with Nalco Water (an Ecolab company), Cargill successfully optimised and reduced its freshwater intake at a local production site in France by 32,500 m3 per year for a 53% drinking water reduction in the cooling systems. It maintained operational excellence and performance while reducing effluent outflow by 93% and contributing to the French government’s overarching water reduction strategy. Our panelists explored the regulatory landscape and shared their thoughts on avoiding overlap between legislation. After the panel discussion, Matthias Jørgensen, Head of Unit, USA and Canada, Directorate-General for Trade, European Commission shared his views on how the EU can make it easier to promote innovation and technological growth. 

Pioneering collaboration for industrial water circularity

With climate change increasing both the demand for freshwater and water scarcity, the Asturias region of Spain identified that wastewater recycling for industrial users like DuPont could offer an efficient and sustainable solution. In collaboration with the local government, the DuPont Asturias site will reduce 80% of its freshwater consumption and replace it with reclaimed municipal wastewater. This partnership has produced a replicable model that will not only deliver significant benefits to Asturias but will also support municipalities across Spain and further afield that face similar challenges. Heading to the US with the AmChams in Europe

From Monday, 22 to Friday, 26 April, AmCham EU joined the AmChams in Europe (ACE) delegation to the United States. Including more than 40 representatives from 30 different AmChams, the delegates visited Washington, DC and Miami to discuss transatlantic business priorities with a range of organisations. Throughout the trip, the need for business-friendly policies across the Atlantic and the importance of the transatlantic relationship continued to be mentioned.

Ahead of World Intellectual Property Day 2024 we looked at how intellectual property (IP) can help us in reaching the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On Thursday, 25 March, we were joined by Lisa Jorgenson, Deputy Director-General, Patents and Technology, World Intellectual Property Organization who shared more about the role that IP plays in building a more sustainable future. By fostering innovation, IP has a crucial role in achieving the SDGs and advancing global wellbeing.

On Wednesday, 17 April, we examined how artificial intelligence (AI) can play a central role in shaping a more equitable future. The panelists looked at the ethical challenges that AI poses while also speaking about how we can make sure that no one is left behind. The overall message was positive, with the speakers focusing on the need to have representative data and diverse teams involved in the development of AI tools.

Examining Enrico Letta's blueprint for competitiveness

With the growing need for a more competitive Europe, Enrico Letta, Italian politician and former Prime Minister of Italy, has released his report on the future of the Single Market. The report provides an analysis of the Single Market and proposes enhancements such as reducing regulatory burden, developing a ‘fifth freedom’ focused on research, innovation, and education, as well as developing strategies to balance the deepening internal market integration while reinforcing external economic relationships.
