Engaging with the EU’s three Presidents
Amidst trade tensions and global uncertainty, senior business leaders from AmCham EU’s Executive Council engaged with Presidents António Costa, Roberta Metsola and Ursula von der Leyen of the European Council, Parliament and Commission. The meetings provided a platform to exchange views on the economic outlook for Europe and the state of the transatlantic relationship at testing times.

AmCham EU reiterated its strong commitment to the transatlantic partnership, which underpins the world’s most significant economic relationship supporting 16 million jobs. At the same time, we expressed strong concerns over the ongoing trade tensions that can cause significant harm to both economies. AmCham EU has consistently stated that it does not support the imposition of US tariffs on EU imports. Tariffs raise costs for consumers and business and disrupt tightly integrated supply chains. With possible EU countermeasures under review, American companies in Europe are calling for de-escalation and a return to dialogue. Both sides should find a negotiated solution that protects the €8.6 trillion transatlantic economy.
The group also emphasised the need to strengthen Europe’s long-term competitiveness, highlighting the importance of a clear and predictable regulatory environment that supports investment and innovation. With 84% of members citing regulatory burden as a barrier to investment, simplification is crucial for driving growth. AmCham EU supports the EU’s commitment to reducing unnecessary complexity in the regulatory landscape and tackling the fragmentation of the Single Market. American companies are committed to Europe with US investment in the EU totalling €2.5 trillion – three times the amount of US investment in the entire Asia-Pacific region.
As part of the programme, the Executive Council also met with Maroš Šefčovič, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Norman Thatcher Scharpf, Chargé d'Affaires, US Mission to the EU; and Michael Hager, Head of Cabinet of Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner for Economy and Productivity.
Our senior business leaders will continue to engage with policymakers to strengthen the competitiveness of Europe and advance the transatlantic economy.
